6:00 PM* Dinner Dialogue: A Smorgasbord of Anterior Segment

Using an interactive format, anterior segment cases will be presented to illustrate a variety of difficult clinical decisions. Focused lecture segments will be followed by group interaction using anonymous voting devices.

- contact lens materials/designs
- contact lens care
- anti-infectives

As the population ages, more of our patients will need primary eye and vision care services delivered in private homes or institutional settings. This lecture will discuss the procedures, special equipment, and pharmaceuticals needed to examine elderly and disabled patients in non-traditional environments.
9:30 AM The Cataract Environment

While cataract replacement is becoming commonplace, the best “treatment” remains prevention. This course will review what we know about the causes of aging cataracts and will also provide insight into why secondary cataracts occur even after successful treatment.
10:30 AM* Is There a Doctor in the House?

Not sure what to do for emergency First Aid until help arrives? This course will present the current first aid measures suggested by the American Heart Association and Mayo Clinic for seizures, cerebral vascular accidents, chemical and electrical burns as well as ocular emergencies.
1:00 – 3:00 PM* Co- Management of the Diabetic Patient
(2 Hours) Rick Ricer MD
What are your diabetic patients being told by their family practice doctors? To be a productive member of the “diabetes-care” team, the OD needs to stay current with medical advances in this area. This lecture will cover the epidemiology, diagnosis, and medical treatment of patients with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Discussion about nutritional recommendations for the diabetic patient will also be covered.

3:00 PM* The Diabetic Eye Examination

This course will cover the posterior and anterior segment pathological changes that can present in patients with diabetes. Clinical pearls for appropriate co management of these patients will be presented.

The ophthalmological treatment of macular degeneration has and is still changing rapidly. This lecture will present the current medical treatment for both dry and wet ARMD including medical and surgical treatment options.
9:30- 11:30 AM* The MUST HAVE Systemic Medications

This lecture covers the best of the best: the systemic drugs that provide the greatest therapeutic usefulness and success. Discussion includes side effects, adverse effects, and dosages of selected therapeutic agents.
1:00 PM-3 PM* Management of Ocular Pain and Inflammation
(2 HOURS) Bruce Onofrey, OD, PhD
A complete review of the indications, contraindications, side effects and dosages of major analgesic/anti-inflammation agents will be given. Drug selection criteria of both narcotic and non-narcotic medications are discussed. The use of steroids vs. NSAIDs is covered in detail.
