At The Ohio State University College of Optometry, we
have a friendly atmosphere that we would like to share with
prospective students who are interviewing with the College
of Optometry. In the past, students who have interviewed
with the College have found it helpful to talk with current
optometry students. As a result, we have created the Student
Host Program to provide interviewees an opportunity to interact
with our students and to experience daily events in the life
of an optometry student at Ohio State.
One way to do this is to join a current student in a
class visit. Nearly all optometry classes are
taught by our own college faculty - Doctors of Optometry
who instruct both in the clinic and in the classroom. Many
of these professors also are involved in research and perform
administrative duties. Class visits allow you to get a
sense of the curriculum as well as meet and interact with
more students.
Another learning experience involves shadowing a fourth
year optometry student in clinic. You can observe as
a student performs a comprehensive exam in one of our seven
in-house clinics: Primary Vision Care, Contact Lens, Low
Vision, Pediatrics, Treatment and Management of Ocular
Disease, Aniseikonia and Binocular Vision. This will give
you a chance to see some of the examination procedures
students learn while attending the College of Optometry.
In addition to experiencing the educational aspects of the
College, you are also invited to get together with a current
student for a casual lunch or dinner. This more informal
setting allows you to ask questions and learn about the "real" life
of an optometry student.
An overnight stay with a current optometry student
provides an opportunity to see life outside of school, which
may include family, work, or social activities. A number
of students have volunteered their home and have provided
a couch or an extra bed for interviewing students to stay
with them for an evening.
We have molded the Student Host Program to be a unique experience
for students interviewing with the College of Optometry at
Ohio State. Feel free to select aspects that best match your
interests in order to customize your visit. If you would
like to take part in our program, the deadline for notification
is one week prior to the interview. A Student Host Program
Coordinator will be happy to arrange your visit. We can be
contacted through the Office of Student Affairs at (614)292-2647 or
e-mail us at
Admissions. We look forward to
meeting and working with you to give you the best experience
possible when visiting The Ohio State University College
of Optometry.
A message from the dean:
Thank you for considering The Ohio State University
College of Optometry. We highly value our students
and strive to create an environment where students
can fulfill their dream of becoming an optometrist.
One of the unique programs we offer to students is
our Student Host Program. Participating in the Host
Program gives you the opportunity to meet and interact
with our students and faculty. We have hosted many
students who have been invited for an interview who
want to get a true feel of what it is like to be a
student at the College. We tailor the hosting experience
to match the individual needs of each participant.
I encourage you to take advantage of this wonderful
opportunity to share in our community. I wish you all
the best as you continue to pursue a career in optometry
and I hope to see you at the College in the near future.
Yours truly,
Mel Shipp, OD, MPH, DrPH Dean |
