Q&A
What brought you to the college of Optometry?
One of my advisers for my PhD started working with a faculty member coming in from UC Berkeley, who was looking for a biostatistician. He recommended me to her, and I got a letter from a Karla Zadnik, OD, PhD, asking if I would be interested in working with them on a project of nearsightedness in kids. The rest is history.
Describe your typical day at work or describe your position/role.
My role is variable. In overseeing different grants, I work with the College’s biostatisticians on completing manuscripts with the statistical analyses they produce. I also work with REDCap, which is an electronic data capture system, to help ensure that data are collected in a high-quality manner. There is also a lot of time spent in grant preparation so that there are new projects to answer vision research questions, and helping others develop new projects.
What brings you the most joy in your work?
Collaborating to complete research that can answer important questions for the vision research community.
What do you do for fun outside of work?
I like to quilt and crochet. I also read, and am perpetually optimistic about improving my garden and protecting it from the roving bands of deer.
What is your go-to Columbus/neighborhood eatery?
My favorite is Cameron’s, but that is not really a “go-to” place, but a “I like to go there” place. Otherwise, we bounce around.
What would you do if you won the lottery?
Travel. And more crafting.
What was your first job?
I worked in the dietary department of my local hospital.
What is the first item on your bucket list?
Go on an Alaskan cruise.
