Student Focus on Casey Cempre
May 2025
As a child, Casey Cempre always loved visiting his optometrist. He remembers, "The scientific artwork and fancy instruments excited me, and my optometrist was great at explaining the eye to kids." Today, as an Ohio State Optometry student, Casey embraces the program's challenges and deeply values the friendships he's formed. "During Buckeye Launch orientation week, I connected with several other students who, like me, had worked non-optometry related jobs before changing career paths," he says. Student Focus on Maya Dey
April 2025
"Ohio State Optometry is a research powerhouse," says first-year student Maya Dey. The Aurora, Ohio native chose Ohio State because, "The program provides extensive support and resources for those interested in optometric science. And most importantly, the program’s rigorous curriculum and exceptional clinical training constantly reassures my decision." She is especially grateful for her classmates, and says, "I am deeply grateful to share my time with individuals who not only understand the rigor and demands of this field but also inspire and motivate me daily."
Student Focus on Catherine Wondra
March 2025
On her Interview Day tour, Ohio State Optometry first-year student Catherine Wondra was impressed by the attention to detail in the Low Vision Clinic's design. She recalls, "When touring the clinic, I heard the low-vision patients are seen on the first floor so they don't have to utilize the stairs or elevator. The large numbers on the recessed exam room doors and the high-contrast carpet allows these patients to exercise as much autonomy as they can upon arrival. I figured if they put this sort of considerable thought into the design of the building’s layout, they must truly care about the well-being of their patients and the success of their students."
Student Focus on Derik Holmberg
February 2025
When researching optometry schools, Derik Holmberg realized that Ohio State was the complete package. "It offers competitive tuition (even for out-of-state students), a diverse student population, excellent NBEO board pass rates, great college sports teams, an OD/MS program, and it’s home to the only optometry fraternity in the country." Now, as a second-year Ohio State Optometry student, Derik is excelling in the classroom and clinic while connecting with his classmates."
Student Focus on Matt Andrew
January 2025
Third-year student Matt Andrew chose Ohio State Optometry because he wanted to be part of a program that would push him academically and help him become a confident optometrist. As an OD/MS student, he has enjoyed working on research and presenting findings at optometry conferences. The relationships he has built with his classmates have been particularly meaningful. "There’s a special kind of bond that is created between classmates when you can look at someone and know all their interesting ocular findings because you’ve performed so many exams on them," he says of his optometric education journey so far. "I’m looking forward to my fourth-year extern rotations where I can focus on caring for patients full time and continuing to grow my clinical skillset."
Student Focus on Amy Ngo
December 2024
When Amy Ngo started looking at optometry schools, she wanted to find an inclusive and supportive place that felt like home. November 2024
When Olivia Pyles had her first eye exam and was prescribed glasses at age eight, she couldn't wait to share her excitement. The first thing she did when she got to school the next day was to have all of her classmates try on her new glasses to see if their vision improved, too. Today, her desire to help others see clearly is backed up by a lot of education and hard work, as she succeeds in the classroom and clinic as an Ohio State Optometry student. In addition to Ohio State's outstanding board passage rates, Olivia chose to become a BuckEYE because, "Four years is a long time to spend in a new city and in a demanding program, so I knew I wanted to choose a program where community was valued."

Ohio State Optometry from there was a no-brainer; I knew that being the best clinician and advocate for my patients meant attending Ohio State Optometry."
Student Focus on Ian Binns

Growing up in Columbus and earning an undergraduate degree in molecular genetics at Ohio State, Ian Binns says, "I was used to the massive scale of the undergraduate classes at the university." But when he started his studies at the College of Optometry, his experience was starkly different. "The small class size in the college was such a breath of fresh air, I no longer felt like a number in a chair at a 700-person lecture. I left that day excited to get my glasses and looking forward to going back to get my eyes checked next year.” Soon, Grace will be on the other side of the eye exam experience. Zak Bogosian has always been a hands-on learner, so he is incredibly well suited to Ohio State Optometry’s immersive, experiential program. What is even better is finally being able to apply our skills and knowledge in the exam room on real live patients!” Outside of the classroom, Zac has connected with his fellow students and networked with optometry alumni as a musician. He has joined the eye-conic “Bad Habits: The Eye Docs of Rock” onstage at a number of events in Columbus, Washington, D.C., and even New York City!
Student Focus on Nathan Stefan and Joshua Stefan
October 2023
You’re not seeing double! This month’s #OSUopt Student Focus is on twins Nathan Stefan and Joshua Stefan. While these brothers don’t always agree, when it came to selecting an optometry school, Ohio State was their top and only choice. After a tour of the college as prospective students, Nathan remembers being “… blown away by how engaged everyone was with answering my questions and the commitment the college was making to improving facilities for our education. It's the reason I only applied to Ohio State; there was no plan B.” Joshua was equally impressed, and says, “I wanted to be one of the best and every year, Ohio State turns out the most accomplished class of optometrists in the country. The low student-to-instructor ratio, smaller class size and amount of clinic experience prior to graduation all convinced me that Ohio State was the place to go.”
