Q&A
How old were you when you received your first eye exam? What was the experience like for you?
I’ve been going to the optometrist since before I can remember. Both of my parents are myopic, so it was only a matter of time. I remember being so jealous of my older brother when he first got glasses so when I finally got my pair in fourth grade, I was beyond excited.
When did you realize that you wanted to pursue a career in optometry?
My freshman year of undergrad is when I realized optometry was the path for me. That was the year I shadowed my optometrist, as well as other optometrist in the area (all Ohio State grads) who continued to excite me and pique my interest in the field.
Why did you choose Ohio State Optometry?
I was extremely impressed on interview day by how much the faculty and staff were interested in selling themselves to me and the other students, all while creating such a welcoming environment. Also seeing how high the boards passing rates are for the college, I felt like it would be a poor decision to pass up such an amazing education here and I have not regretted that decision once.
What was your first impression of Ohio State Optometry?
I enjoyed the close feel of both the students and faculty. Because our program is so small - especially compared to other optometry programs - I feel like the professors know who I am, I know them, and I know all my fellow classmates. There’s a great sense of community here, and I’m so thankful and happy to be a part of it.
What surprised you most about Ohio State and/or Columbus?
Growing up in Ohio, I had heard so much about what game day is like at Ohio State and the electricity in the air, but nothing prepares you for the real deal. That first home game with the tailgate at EYE (Epsilon Psi Epsilon) and walking up to the ‘Shoe with all of my classmates was like nothing I’d done before. Definitely one of the most surprisingly fun things about Ohio State.
Which clubs/organizations have you joined at Ohio State?
I was elected the Class President for the Class of 2026, which has allowed me a lot of opportunities to help with some of the behind-the-scenes workings of college and the student experience here. It was blast getting to help out with Buckeye Launch, the welcome and orientation week for incoming first-years!
I’ve also had the privilege to be one of the founding members of The Prismatic Effect: an LGBTQ+ organization on campus to help foster community and awareness for students within the community and for issues affecting the community within optometry.
Who has most positively affected you during your time as an optometry student so far?
Definitely my fellow classmates. Being able to have 70 other people who are going through the same triumph and struggles makes the experience so much better. You always have someone to rely on when you don’t quite understand a subject, and you can always return the favor. And sometimes, it's even nice to know everyone’s in the same boat of not being sure how the next exam will go. I’m so thankful for these lifelong friends and colleagues.
What has been your favorite part of optometry school so far, and what are you looking forward to in future years of the program?
Attending Optometry’s Meeting last summer in Washington D.C. was an amazing experience and so much fun. This spring, it has been fulfilling to give full eye exams to friends and family. It’s nice to feel everything coming together and really start to show off all of the skills we have been learning.
What advice do you have for the class of 2028 as they navigate the admissions process this year?
When it comes around to interview time, don’t be afraid to let your personality shine through and set you apart. Our profession involves a lot of interaction with our patients, so it’s important to know and show how well you can navigate a conversation with people, and present yourself as a welcoming and caring figure that people can trust as a person, and as a healthcare provider.
