How old were you when you received your first eye exam? What was the experience like for you?
I have been receiving eye exams for about as long as I can remember. I enjoyed going as a young child because I really wanted glasses, so I would attempt to trick my eye doctor by acting like my vision was worse than it was. I eventually got my first pair when I was in third grade.
When did you realize that you wanted to pursue a career in optometry?
I first began considering a career in optometry during my freshman year of college, although I wasn't initially certain it was the right path for me. As I progressed through my foundational science courses and gained a deeper understanding of the eye and visual system, my interest grew stronger. I found the science behind vision fascinating and knew the profession was always evolving. Around that time, I also reflected on the example set by my optometrist, Dr. Zamora, whose relatability, compassion, and dedication to the people in his community left a lasting impression on me. Ultimately, I realized that optometry aligns with both my intellectual interests and the kind of meaningful, fulfilling career I want for myself.
Why did you choose Ohio State Optometry?
Initially, I hadn’t strongly considered Ohio State and was not particularly excited for my interview. However, during my visit, I could not ignore the gut feeling that Ohio State was the perfect fit for me. The facilities are exceptional, and the entire staff is wholly invested in the success of the next generation of optometrists. The abundance of academic resources, clinical opportunities, and the vibrant community both on campus and in Columbus is hard to beat. It is evident that current students, faculty, and alumni truly believe this is the best program in the country and are deeply invested in maintaining Ohio State’s reputation as a leader in producing world-class clinicians and researchers. It is all very special to be a part of.
What was your first impression of Ohio State Optometry?
The faculty is very passionate and intentional.
What surprised you most about Ohio State and/or Columbus?
Columbus feels smaller than it is. The area surrounding Ohio State feels like its own little town, but you are always in close proximity to the perks of being in a large city.
Which clubs/organizations have you joined at Ohio State?
I am involved with Epsilon Psi Epsilon, AOSA, NOSA, and Private Practice Club.
Who has most positively affected you during your time as an optometry student so far?
The new friends here I made in the program who make school fun. OSU is successful in promoting community between all years of students. I greatly benefitted from the advice and perspective provided by those ahead of me in the program.
What was your favorite part of optometry school so far and what are you looking forward to in future years of the program?
My favorite part of optometry school is applying what I have learned outside of the classroom. "Optics is everywhere!" I look forward to learning and practicing clinical skills this fall and having the chance to support and mentor the incoming classes, just as others have done for me.
What advice do you have for future optometry students?
Take care of yourself! Hard work is necessary in optometry school, but don't sacrifice your wellbeing for temporary success in the classroom. Always make time to do things that you enjoy.
