Q&A

How old were you when you received your first eye exam? What was the experience like for you?

At the age of 12, I had my first eye exam, which I had eagerly anticipated. I was particularly excited because several of my closest friends and my favorite teacher wore glasses. The experience was truly memorable, and I will always cherish the joy I felt when selecting my very first pair of glasses.

When did you realize that you wanted to pursue a career in optometry?

I shadowed an optometrist from my hometown for the first time as a junior in high school per the suggestion of my former chemistry teacher. The doctor I shadowed cared for the patients in such a welcoming manner, and I felt very grateful to be able to witness the result of his caring approach. Simple gestures, like asking the patients for updates on their families, appeared to make them feel more at ease while getting their annual exam. Eventually, this experience led me to further explore the intricate world of vision care.

Why did you choose Ohio State Optometry?

I ultimately chose Ohio State Optometry for an abundance of reasons. Namely, Ohio State Optometry is a research powerhouse. The program provides extensive support and resources for those interested in optometric science. And most importantly, the program’s rigorous curriculum and exceptional clinical training constantly reassures my decision. Every day I feel increasingly confident that I will be a well-prepared, competent clinician for my future patients.

What was your first impression of Ohio State Optometry?

I was introduced to Ohio State Optometry while I was completing my undergraduate degree. My initial impressions were of the brand new stunning Optometry Clinic and Hamilton Hall spaces. I was also very impressed by the kind and attentive faculty, students, and staff. Overall, I felt very welcomed by everyone.

What surprised you most about Ohio State and/or Columbus?

I was surprised by the vibrant and diverse food scene of Columbus. The city is full of incredible restaurants with varying cuisine offering everything from cozy, locally owned diners to some outstanding restaurants with globally inspired cuisine. My friends and I have even made it a tradition to explore new brunch spots after the whirlwind of midterm season (Drunch is a favorite)!

Which clubs/organizations have you joined at Ohio State?

During the fall semester I decided to join the Private Practice Club. I have always been intrigued by the inner workings of running an optometric private practice and through this club, I have gained very valuable insight into the world of practice ownership. I am also currently pledging the optometry fraternity, Epsilon Psi Epsilon. As a professional fraternity, it has presented me with a unique blend of exciting tailgates and rush events while providing tips on successful networking skills.

Who has most positively affected you during your time as an optometry student so far?

My roommates, who are also first-year optometry students, have been an incredible source of support and positivity throughout my journey in the program. I am deeply grateful to share my time with individuals who not only understand the rigor and demands of this field but also inspire and motivate me daily.

What was your favorite part of optometry school so far, and what are you looking forward to in future years of the program?

My favorite part of optometry school has been participating in the many opportunities to get involved with experienced ODs in professional settings that have allowed me to gain extensive knowledge about the various paths that can be taken with a career in optometry. Additionally, I started shadowing several OPT IIIs in the primary vision care clinic, and it has already proven to be an incredibly valuable experience. I have loved hearing their entertaining stories about their experiences in the clinic but I have also gained so much knowledge from them, and I am more than excited to see what the future of my professional career holds.

What advice do you have for future optometry students?

For future optometry students, some of the best advice I received from the upperclassmen is to remember that you are embarking on a journey that combines science, compassion, and the opportunity to profoundly impact people's lives. Optometry is such a dynamic field, constantly evolving with advancements in technology, research, and legislature, so it is imperative that you stay curious and have fun!
