Q&A

How old were you when you received your first eye exam? What was the experience like for you?

I was in middle school when I got my first eye exam. I had just started out competitively shooting and couldn’t see the target very well. Getting glasses was one of the reasons that motivated me to continue with the sport, eventually leading me to compete Division I in college at UTM!

When did you realize that you wanted to pursue a career in optometry?

It was always a career path I considered, even from my first eye exam. My parents always told me that I had the personality to be an eye doctor because I am so outgoing. Although I started my undergraduate degree as a criminal justice major, I’ve always wanted to make a difference in people’s lives, and at the time, I thought that was the most direct route. During my sophomore year of undergrad, I realized I no longer wanted to pursue that path. The morning before registering for classes, I asked for a sign—should I stick with criminal justice or try to complete the prerequisites for optometry school like I had considered in high school? Later that day, I ran into Lauren—now one of my best friends—who was researching optometry school requirements to make sure she was on track. I couldn’t have asked for a more direct sign that this was what I was meant to do and where I’m meant to be.

Why did you choose Ohio State Optometry?

From the moment I arrived in Columbus, it felt like I was meant to be here. The faculty is the best in the world, and everyone truly cares about the students.

What was your first impression of Ohio State Optometry?

My first impression was on my interview day. I felt so welcomed by everyone I encountered.

What surprised you most about Ohio State and/or Columbus?

You can make the campus feel as big or as small as you want. I went to undergrad in a small town, so I was worried I would be overwhelmed in such a big city, but Columbus has never made me feel anything but at home.

Which clubs/organizations have you joined at Ohio State?

I am a member of AOSA, NOSA, and EYE. I am on the executive board for SVOSH and UltraSound A Capella. Getting to be part of so many organizations is one of my favorite things about Ohio State! I’ve made so many friends outside of the Class of 2026 as well as the optometry program through them!

Who has most positively affected you during your time as an optometry student so far?

There are so many people in my life I’m thankful for helping me get through this journey. My two younger siblings Becca and Paul, my friends, and so many more. With that being said, my parents are my biggest supporters, and I owe all my success to them. I wouldn’t be where I am today without all their love and support. An honorable mention to my cat BAM as well, who loves to help me study.

What was your favorite part of optometry school so far and what are you looking forward to in future years of the program?

My favorite part of optometry school so far was going to Lima, Peru this summer with SVOSH. We provided eye care to nearly 3,000 patients who had limited or no access to it. It was such a life-changing experience and really put into perspective how important what we do is. I hope to continue to provide this kind of service after I graduate.

What advice do you have for future optometry students?

I have a sticky note on my desk from the first day of optometry school that says, “Be happy with what you have while working for what you want.” It’s been a reminder to enjoy the journey and appreciate every moment, and I encourage future Buckeyes to do the same.
