Q&A
How old were you when you received your first eye exam? What was the experience like for you?
I was five years old when I received my first eye exam after being flagged during a school vision screening. I remember the clinicians being so kind and patient throughout the process, and it didn’t take long for me to forgive them for the dilation drops. Two weeks later, I picked up my first pair of glasses, and I’ll never forget how magical it felt to finally see the world with clarity, from the fine details in leaves to the sparkle of sunlight on pavement. That experience opened my eyes, both literally and figuratively, to how transformative good vision care can be, and it planted the first seed of my interest in optometry.
When did you realize that you wanted to pursue a career in optometry?
Optometry stood out to me early in life as a career that balanced science, patient care, and meaningful human connection. As a child, I saw my optometrist as a miracle-worker who gave me the gift of clear sight. That sense of gratitude stayed with me, and as I got older, I realized I wanted to create that same experience for others and make a lasting difference in people’s lives. Optometry allows me to combine my curiosity about ocular health with my desire to serve others, which made it a natural fit for me.
Why did you choose Ohio State Optometry?
I wanted to attend a program that values academic excellence as much as community and professional growth, and Ohio State Optometry stood out immediately. During my interview, I could sense how passionate the faculty were about both the field of optometry and their students’ success. Their dedication and warmth made me confident that this was a place where I would be challenged, supported, and inspired to reach my full potential. Choosing Ohio State was not just about joining a program; it was about becoming part of a community that truly feels like home.
What was your first impression of Ohio State Optometry?
My first impression was how well-supported the students are at every level. From academics to wellness to professional development, it was clear that Ohio State Optometry ensures that its students have every resource they need to thrive. The culture of encouragement and collaboration stood out to me right away and made me excited to begin this journey surrounded by people who care deeply about one another’s success.
What surprised you most about Ohio State and/or Columbus?
I was pleasantly surprised by how Columbus offers the best of both worlds. It provides the energy and opportunities of a large city while maintaining the warmth and familiarity of a college town. There is always something new to explore, yet the community feels close and welcoming. That balance has made my experience here both personally and professionally rewarding.
Which clubs/organizations have you joined at Ohio State?
I have had the privilege of becoming involved in several organizations that have enriched my experience at Ohio State. I serve as a Senator and Class of 2028 Representative in the Inter-Professional Council (IPC) and as Secretary of the American Optometric Student Association (AOSA). Within IPC, I participate in the Sustainability and Inter-Professional Summit Committees, as well as the University Research Committee. Beyond those roles, I am a member of several optometry-related clubs, including Private Practice Club and Epsilon Psi Epsilon. Each organization has allowed me to grow as a student and future clinician while connecting with peers who share similar passions.
Who has most positively affected you during your time as an optometry student so far?
My most positive influence in Optometry school so far has been my big, Avae. She has been both a mentor and a friend, helping me navigate the academic rigor of optometry school while offering advice and encouragement when I needed it most. Having someone who has gone through the same experiences and genuinely cares about my well-being has made all the difference throughout this transition into professional school.
What was your favorite part of optometry school so far and what are you looking forward to in future years of the program?
My favorite part of optometry school has been learning and practicing clinical skills with my classmates. It has been incredibly rewarding to connect what we have learned in lectures to real techniques and to see how everything comes together in the exam room. Each week, I can feel myself growing closer to the clinician I hope to become. I am especially looking forward to third year, when we will apply our training in clinic and begin helping patients improve their vision and quality of life.
What advice do you have for future optometry students?
Get involved early and take advantage of every opportunity to connect with others. The friendships and professional relationships you build will become your greatest support system. It is easy to get caught up in the academic demands, but remember why you began this journey: to make a difference in people’s lives. Your time here will pass quickly, so embrace every opportunity and enjoy being part of such a passionate and inspiring community at Ohio State Optometry.
