How old were you when you received your first eye exam? What was the experience like for you?

I was 11 years old when I had my first eye exam, and it was a spectacular experience. Although I never liked the dilation drops, being able to see crystal clear through my glasses for the first time was one of the best experiences of my life.

When did you realize that you wanted to pursue a career in optometry?

It was actually through a summer optometry program I found in undergrad at University of Virginia (UVA). I was taking a pre-health class that introduced college alumni and medical professionals to our class to expose us to the careers within the healthcare spectrum. It was through this course that a faculty member from an optometry school came and explained the field and the opportunities within. I talked with the faculty member and applied to the school's summer program. After that summer from dissecting cow eyes, using a BIO for the first time, and learning about programs like SVOSH, I knew that optometry was in my vision for helping those in need.

Why did you choose Ohio State Optometry?

It was indeed one of the best decisions of my life to choose Ohio State, but I found out about the program later than expected. Although I grew up in Columbus and was an Ohio State fan, I never knew about Ohio State's optometry program until I applied for I-DOC, a summer program to introduce students to optometry to reduce disparities in healthcare. Through meeting many students and great faculty, including Dr. Delgado, Dr. Earley, and Jen Bennett, I knew that Ohio State was the school for me. And the more I set foot within the classroom and interact with faculty, the more thankful I am to be a part of this program. Like former Ohio State quarterback Will Howard said, "I can't believe God gave me a chance to be a Buckeye. It's truly like nothing else."

What was your first impression of Ohio State Optometry?

My first impression was very clear from my time in I-DOC; Ohio State is a place where you can be your best not only in your education, but your mindset as well. When I met faculty from I-DOC, their perspectives were something that I can only imagine. Many of the faculty were renowned researchers, award-winning faculty, and keen advocates for the field of optometry. But what made the faculty at Ohio State different was that they were more than their research or dedication to the field; they were people who enjoyed the present, who cared for the community, and always did their best for each other and for their students.

What surprised you most about Ohio State and/or Columbus?

What surprised me the most was how Ohio State prioritizes the interprofessional relationships between the health sciences and how that influences the many relationships within healthcare institutions such as hospitals, pharmacies, and clinics, for the better.

Which clubs/organizations have you joined at Ohio State?

I have joined the Fellowship of Christian Optometrists (FCO), Epsilon Psi Epsilon (ΕΨΕ), American Optometric Student Association, National Optometric Student Association, and Cultural Lenses, a club focusing on the beautiful culture within Optometry.

Who has most positively affected you during your time as an optometry student so far?

There have been many faculty and doctors I have worked with who have left a lasting impact. One doctor I will always be thankful will be Dr. Mark Orso, an Ohio State Optometry alum and current President of the National Optometric Association(NOA). Ever since meeting him during I-DOC in 2024, he has provided great insight and advice throughout my journey, and I am indeed thankful for him.

What was your favorite part of optometry school so far and what are you looking forward to in future years of the program?

It's very hard to limit one moment during my time in optometry school as my favorite, but if I had to choose one, it was probably Buckeye Launch. As an extrovert, I indeed love interacting with others and love to foster a sense of community. And with Buckeye Launch being an opportunity for us to meet one another before classes began, it was nice meeting some of the best optometrists this world has ever seen!

What advice do you have for future optometry students?

Enjoy the present! Whatever steps you are in the process of being the best optometrist you can be, remember that you are in your current position for a reason. Whether it's an opportunity to grow or succeed, enjoy it now. It's called the present since it's a gift to be where you are.
