This year, the Hazael Edward Welton Breakfast for African-American and Hispanic Alumni was particularly meaningful as relatives of the late Hazael Edward Welton (BS’38) traveled all the way from Iowa to attend. Calvin Coolidge Sayers Jr., Dr. Welton’s great-nephew, brought his family, C.J. Sayers and Danny Cochran. Mr. Coolidge Sayers shared his collection of mementos and artifacts of the late Dr. Welton including photos, his diploma, and documents.

At the breakfast, held on the Sunday of Homecoming weekend in the Bad Habits Lounge in The Optometry Clinic, Dean Karla Zadnik, OD, PhD, and Vondolee Delgado-Nixon, PhD, welcomed guests with speeches and updates from the college. Jacqueline Davis (OD’81, MPH) spoke about the impact that Dr. Welton had on her career and how his mentoring and support of minority optometrists led to his gift of a named scholarship. Mr. Coolidge Sayers read Dr. Welton’s own writing describing his optometric career and the challenges he faced as a Black optometrist starting out in 1938.
