Acting Dean's Welcome

A message from the College of Optometry's Acting Dean
A portrait of Dr. Jeff Walline

A class graduates, and another matriculates. This year, the Class of 2025 met all of the challenges placed before them over the past four years and became a part of the legacy at The Ohio State University College of Optometry. They joined a profession that is also in transition, modernizing the way we practice to meet the evolving needs of our patients with scope modernization. They also enter a profession that is shifting in the way we deliver care with the advent of artificial intelligence and increasing practice opportunities due to shifting business models. I have the utmost confidence that the Class of 2025 will exceed all of the high expectations placed on them as they begin to practice optometry.

Just as classes of students turn over, leadership in the College of Optometry also undergoes transitions. However, the enduring legacy of The Ohio State University College of Optometry remains steadfast. For decades, our college has stood as a pillar of excellence in optometric education, clinical care, and research. That legacy—built by passionate faculty, dedicated students, and visionary leaders—will continue to flourish.

Our commitment to academic rigor, innovative research, and compassionate patient care has made Ohio State Optometry a national leader in the field. These core values are deeply embedded in our culture, transcending any single administration. As we turn the page to a new chapter, we do so with confidence, knowing that the strength of our community and the integrity of our mission will guide us forward. Together, we will continue to shape the future of optometry and inspire the next generation of leaders in vision care.

Every challenge is an opportunity. This particular challenge will be met with fervor and a strong desire to continue expanding Ohio State Optometry’s influence on the profession. It has been my greatest pleasure to lead the College of Optometry for the past 17 months. I look forward to continuing that leadership in another capacity. Thank you to the faculty, staff, students, and alumni who make serving the BuckEYE community so meaningful and fun!

Sincerely,

Jeffrey Walline (OD, MS’98, PhD’02)
