The Class of 2028 White Coat Ceremony
On May 10, 2025, The Ohio State University College of Optometry proudly celebrated the Class of 2028 at the annual White Coat Ceremony. The White Coat Ceremony, founded by “Buckeye” Bob Newcomb (OD’71, MPH), continues to be a meaningful tradition that marks students’ transition from classroom learning to clinical care.
Acting Dean Jeff Walline (OD, MS’98, PhD’02), welcomed the audience with spirited Buckeye pride, honoring the accomplishments and resilience of this exceptional cohort. Jason Ortman (OD’00), president of the Optometry Alumni Society, and Tim Fries (OD’04, MBA, MPH), president of the Ohio Optometric Association, delivered heartfelt remarks that emphasized the symbolism of the white coat as a representation of responsibility, trust, and service. Both alumni inspired students to embrace their roles as compassionate clinicians and future leaders in the field.
Associate Dean of Academic Affairs Michael Earley (OD/MS’88, PhD’92) and Associate Dean for Clinical Services Gregory Nixon (OD’96) presented each student with their white coat as Acting Dean Walline read a personal statement written by the student—each one a powerful reflection of the individual’s journey, character, and heartfelt gratitude.
The ceremony also featured musical performances by our beloved alumni band, Bad Habits: The Eye Docs of Rock, Michael Raies (OD’89), Patrick Dollenmayer (OD’91), and Tony Fenton (OD’89); and a humorous, reflective address from this year’s class-elected student speaker, Noah Shireman (’28), that captured perfectly the growth, resilience, and strong camaraderie that has defined their first year of optometry school.
The White Coat Ceremony embodies the strong sense of community and excellence that defines Ohio State Optometry. The Class of 2028 steps into clinic with confidence and the enduring support of the Buckeye family. Congratulations, Class of 2028!
