Visionary Appreciation
On a memorable afternoon at the Blackwell Inn and Pfhal Conference Center, The Ohio State University College of Optometry hosted the Visionary Appreciation Celebration, an event dedicated to recognizing and stewarding the generous donors who have significantly contributed to the college’s success. The celebration, held under the leadership of Acting Dean Jeff Walline (OD, MS’98, PhD’02), brought together faculty, students, and benefactors to reflect on the transformative impact of philanthropy.
Gratitude and Reflection
The event featured heartfelt remarks from esteemed members of the college, highlighting the profound influence of donor support on various aspects of the institution. Don Mutti, OD, PhD, the E.F. Wildermuth Endowed Professor of Optometry, shared insights into how holding an endowed professorship has propelled his research forward. His work, made possible through the generosity of the E.F. Wildermuth Foundation, continues to advance the field of optometry and contribute to groundbreaking discoveries in the area of myopia treatment.
Greg Nixon (OD’96) spoke passionately about the new clinic building, a state-of-the-art facility that has revolutionized both the student experience and patient care at the college. This modern clinic, funded through the philanthropic efforts of over 600 donors, provides students with hands-on learning opportunities in a cutting-edge environment, while offering patients access to top-tier optometric services in a welcoming and accessible location. Dr. Nixon’s remarks underscored the critical role that donor contributions play in enhancing educational and clinical outcomes.
Student Voices: The Impact of Scholarships
The celebration also featured inspiring speeches from two third-year students, Griffin Mason (’26) and Insam Alsanai (’26), who shared their personal experiences of how scholarships have shaped their academic journeys. Both students expressed deep gratitude for the financial support that has allowed them to pursue their dreams without the burden of financial stress. Their stories highlighted the tangible benefits of scholarships in fostering academic excellence and personal growth.
Honoring Excellence with Bailey Medals
In a special segment of the evening, the college honored Debbie Hettler (OD’80, MPH), Rodney Hathaway (MS/OD’76, PhD ‘79), along with CooperVision, with Bailey Medals. Steve Rosinski (OD’11) accepted CooperVision’s award. These awards recognize individual donors who have contributed a minimum of $50,000, and corporations who have contributed a minimum of $250,000 over their lifetime toward the college’s mission. The recipients’ dedication and generosity have left an indelible mark on the institution, inspiring generations of optometrists and researchers to invest in the future of the profession through supporting The Ohio State University College of Optometry.
A Vision for the Future
The Visionary Appreciation Celebration was not only a moment to acknowledge past achievements but also an opportunity to look ahead. The event reinforced the college’s commitment to advancing optometric education, research, and patient care through continued philanthropic support. Dr. Walline emphasized the importance of ongoing collaboration between the college and its donors to sustain and expand its impact.
As the evening drew to a close, attendees left with a renewed sense of purpose and a shared vision for the future. The Ohio State University College of Optometry remains dedicated to its mission, buoyed by the generosity of its supporters and the successes achieved during the Visionary Appreciation Celebration.
