The EF Wildermuth Optometric Research Clinic is proud to offer a variety of impactful research opportunities this season! Studies currently enrolling range in topics from dry eye disease and myopia control to traumatic brain injuries.
Participating in or referring patients to research studies is vital as it drives progress and leads to better diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases. By contributing to research, you can help generate valuable data that can improve patient care, shape clinical guidelines, and bring innovative therapies to life. Participation also supports the advancement of knowledge in optometry where answers are still needed, ultimately benefiting current and future generations. Whether through surveys or clinical trials, every participant plays a meaningful role in shaping the future of eyecare.
Three studies conducted by Marjean Kulp (OD’91, MS’93) are searching for children with amblyopia to participate in vision studies. Amblyopia is considered the most common cause of decreased vision in a single eye among children. There is a long list of treatment options available for amblyopia including patching therapy, corrective lenses, and vision therapy. Dr. Kulp’s lab is comparing these treatments to assess which is superior in several different studies.
The first study, ATS22, is searching for children with unilateral amblyopia who are 3-12 years old and have not had prior treatment. The study will compare treating amblyopia with glasses and patching at the same time to treating with glasses and then patching after. Another study, ATS23, is searching for children 4 to 7 years of age to assess whether treatment with Luminopia, a new virtual reality-based treatment, treats amblyopia as good as patching. The final study, ATS25, is searching for children who are 8-12 years old to assess two different types of virtual reality therapies.
