Biographical narrative

I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering (2004) from Wright State University and a Doctor of Optometry degree and Master of Science in Vision Science (2008) from The Ohio State University.  After graduation, I completed a residency in Pediatric Optometry at University of Houston College of Optometry (UHCO). I began my clinical faculty career at UHCO teaching in the Specialty Pediatric Clinic, Neuro-Optometric Rehab Clinic and within the optometric procedures curriculum.  I also founded the Brain Injury Vision Rehabilitation Residency at UHCO.

I have been on faculty at The Ohio State University College of Optometry (OSUCO) since 2012 and I am currently appointed as a Professor of Clinical Optometry. I serve as the Chief of the Binocular Vision and Pediatric (BVP) Services and founding Program Coordinator for our Pediatric Optometry, Vision Therapy and Rehabilitation Residency.  I believe in having a strong team that feels supported.  Within the BVP Service, we have a family atmosphere which welcomes our clinicians – faculty, fellows, residents and student interns.  In addition to a clinic chief, I serve as a clinical attending to our students, clinical mentor to our resident and advanced practice fellows, and peer mentor to fellow faculty and graduate students.

Didactically, I use my clinical expertise to teach the course Vision of Children, where we explore how to adapt our typical exam sequence to examine children.  I am also instructor of record for the Keystone II course, for which I work with our clinic chiefs to develop clinical cases to teach our students problem processing and differential diagnosis.  I also assist in multiple laboratory courses in optometric procedures and vision therapy.

My main research interest is in the area of visual sequelae after concussion.  I have participated in a number of studies as a clinical examiner and co-investigator that have explored the issue of light sensitivity after concussion.  Most recently, I lead a study looking at the binocular vision and oculomotor sequelae in adolescents after sports-related concussion. And, I will soon begin collaborating on a multi-center study, in the role of site principal investigator, which will explore the natural history of visual sequelae in adolescent concussion.

In addition to clinical and didactic teaching at the university level, I thoroughly enjoy taking on the challenge of teaching my optometry colleagues around the country.  I have had the opportunity to present continuing education courses at the national, state and local levels.  I lecture in the areas of pediatric optometry, binocular vision and acquired brain injury.
