Dr. Lai: My role right now is I'm a clinical faculty, so I teach a lot of the clinical courses; I oversee our patients in the contact lens Clinic because I'm the chief of our contact lens service.
I decided to teach as an optometrist because I've always enjoyed teaching. They're not just learning from me; they're learning from lots and lots of great instructors, other clinical attendings, and I want the students to get a piece and of knowledge from everybody and be the best of all of us.
I can communicate my preferences and my professional opinions to my students and I hope that what they take away from it is the way they want to be of an optometrist.
Everybody, all the students, all the faculty, really appreciated that we have a diverse student body, and that we don't just want one type of students. We want all our students to have different backgrounds, different opinions, because that's really what makes students interesting.
And so coming in as a student I felt that whatever history and background I had was appreciated, but I also had a chance to find out about other people too, and learn about them as well. We have been at this for a long time, we know what we're doing, but we also know that the profession is evolving, and so we have opportunities because we are taking advantage of being on such a large university campus.
We know how to be an optometry school, and so we can concentrate on teaching our students and making sure the best optometrists that they can be. It makes it easier for us to see where optometry is going because we have that long established program.
