Maddie: I actually went to Ohio State for undergrad, so I was already a Buckeye. I already knew kind of the ropes and what it was like, but I feel like coming into the optometry school it's a whole different experience because it's a smaller campus within a really large campus.
The small class size just gives us more of an opportunity to meet each other, and as well as upper and underclassmen, different people, different classes.
It's really nice to just be able to get to know everybody, and get really close, and that's one of my favorite things.
The biggest benefit I found of being a student leader is improving your communication skills, and that's something that I feel like has helped me, even talking with patients in clinic.
So I'm now more confident to give that patient education, and talk to people, and get up in front of a crowd, and kind of not be anxious or scared to, and I feel like that's one of the biggest things that I've improved upon since being a student leader.
Starting in your first year, you have a program called SocialEyes, and that was one of my favorite things--just getting to know your professors, getting to know your classmates outside of school, so that's like, just that in and of itself is really fun.
