FCO Buckeyes help to bring sight to Jamaica

Imagine the joy of seeing the world clearly for the first time in years. That was the reality for many Jamaicans this March, thanks in part to a team from The Ohio State University College of Optometry. From March 9-14, 2025, nine optometry students and one alumni OD embarked on a transformative mission trip to Montego Bay, Jamaica, in collaboration with Mission of Sight.

During their time abroad, the Buckeyes observed life-transforming cataract surgeries performed by Dr. David Brown of Vision Outreach International and his expert team. The students played an active role in pre- and post-operative care while witnessing firsthand the power of restored vision and how optometry, combined with faith, can bring hope to those in need.

For many students, the experience was about more than just clinical learning—it was about connection. They were inspired by the kindness and hospitality of the Jamaican community, from the patients they cared for to the dedicated staff at the clinic. Many were moved by the emotional moments when patients had their post-op patches removed and could see clearly again. Student Allison Fields shared the unforgettable joy of staying with patients throughout their surgical journey, from pre-op preparation to post-op recovery. Others reflected on how working in such a compassionate, faith-driven environment strengthened their perspective on the impact of eye care.

Beyond the rewarding clinical experience, students appreciated the perfect balance of hard work and reflection. Their days were filled with learning and patient care, while evenings provided time to recharge—whether through beachside conversations, devotions, or sharing insights with fellow team members.

This mission trip was not only an opportunity for students to refine their clinical skills but also a chance to engage with a global perspective on eye care. Their experiences reinforced the importance of service, teamwork, and the power of sight restoration.

Mission of Sight, a charitable 501(c)3 nonprofit, dedicated to providing essential eye care in Jamaica continues to bridge the gap for those who lack access to affordable and accessible eye care and surgeries. Through partnerships with medical professionals, volunteers, and universities like Ohio State, the organization is making a tangible difference in the lives of many.
