Fortuna Scholarship Awardees Excel in Pediatrics

Taylor McGann (OD’17) and Steven Manning (OD’18) have been named as recipients of The Ohio State University College of Optometry Dr. Allen James Fortuna Memorial Scholarship for graduate students studying pediatrics.

 

Ohio State Optometry Students Receive Walman Scholarship

Carolyn Chakuroff, Kelsey Ferlin, Christi Locke, Kelly Morgan and Whitney Spitnale of The Ohio State University College of Optometry's Class of 2019 (pictured left to right below) have been named as recipients of the 2018 Walman Scholarship. This is a national award involving applicants from all schools and colleges of optometry.

Low Vision Researchers Receive RPB/CTAF Grant

Dr. Bradley Dougherty, assistant professor of optometry at The Ohio State University, received a $150,000 award from the Consumer Technology Association Foundation and Research to Prevent Blindness for his project, Evaluation of a Head-mounted Device for Reading and Wayfinding.

Dr. Rebecca Deffler has been selected as the 2018 winner of the Bill Mattingly Memorial Scholarship. This is a competitive national award open to all optometry and ophthalmology students and ODs and MDs completing a residency in Low Vision.

Blumenthaler wins 2018 Essilor Student Scholarship

Congratulations to Marielle Blumenthaler (Class of 2019), who has been named The Ohio State University College of Optometry winner of the 2018 Essilor Student Scholarship. This case report competition involves patient encounters using an Essilor product to meet the prescription needs of the patient.

Optometry Board Pass Rates Published

For the first time, pass rates on National Board examinations for the 2016-2017 academic year are now available on the website of the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry (ASCO).

This data, compiled by the National Board of Examiners in Optometry (NBEO) in conjunction with ASCO member institutions, includes the first-time pass rates for each school/college on Parts 1, 2 and 3 of the exam, the ultimate pass rate for each institution, and national averages for all of the above.

Optometry Researchers Receive Ann Ellis Fund Award

Ohio State University College of Optometry researchers Nathan Doble, PhD, and Stacey Choi, PhD, along with Mark Slabaugh, MD from the Department of Ophthalmology, were awarded $100,000 over two years from the Ann Ellis Fund.

Beta Sigma Kappa Inducts New Members

BSK 2017 Inductees The Beta Sigma Kappa (ΒΣΚ) Optometric Honor Society inducted 45 new members on Nov. 15, recognizing scholastic excellence within the optometry curriculum at The Ohio State University College of Optometry. 

Grant Supports Innovative Faculty Research

A $500,000 endowment provided by Vision Service Plan Global is used to advance innovation and technology created by members of the Graduate Faculty in Vision Science. The funds support research activities, technology innovation, and/or essential equipment that is likely to attract subsequent support. These funds will help improve the research portfolio of the College of Optometry and advance vision-related science and technology.

 

Optometry Students Educate Staff

Optometry 101 is back! This College of Optometry program allows non-optometrist staff to learn a little more about the science and terminology of optometry, while giving students the opportunity to solidify their knowledge in preparation for boards and hone their presentation skills.  

Over the next several months, a select group of students will deliver 30-minute presentations on a variety of vision science and optometric topics.
