How old were you when you received your first eye exam? What was the experience like for you?

To be completely honest, I don’t remember a lot about my first eye exam, as I was taken to a pediatric ophthalmologist when I was three years old for an eye turn. The one thing I do remember was that after I got drops in my eyes, they sent my mom and I down the street to the local bakery for doughnuts while my eyes dilated. Very sweet!

When did you realize that you wanted to pursue a career in optometry?

In the summer following my freshman year of undergrad I shadowed a friend’s parents and loved the variety of patients they were seeing as well as the role they played as an institution of vision care within their community.

Why did you choose Ohio State Optometry?

I chose Ohio State Optometry for in large part the value of the education. I knew I would be receiving an unrivaled education, in a city where cost of living is relatively lower compared to other schools. Between the OD/MS and the Graduate Business Minor, I knew Ohio State Optometry would open many doors outside of the 9-5 professional life.

What was your first impression of Ohio State Optometry?

My first impression of Ohio State Optometry was reluctant admiration. Coming from the University of Michigan, just stepping foot in the building was a challenge. I remember saying after my interview that, “If I didn’t want to vomit, I think I could really like it here.”

What surprised you most about Ohio State and/or Columbus?

I knew Ohio State provided opportunities to participate in optometric research, but I was pleasantly surprised by the institution that supports those opportunities. Optometric research at Ohio State has pushed the profession forward in so many ways. It is very cool to go to Academy and realize some of the most well-attended talks are given by your professors from Ohio State.

Which clubs/organizations have you joined at Ohio State?

I am the current President of Private Practice Club and I enjoy active membership in AOSA and NOSA.

Who has most positively affected you during your time as an optometry student so far?

I have been positively affected by the community of friends and future colleagues who have supported me as I make my way through a rigorous curriculum.

What advice do you have for the Class of 2027 as they start optometry school this fall?

Suspend your disbelief and dive in head first! It will be tempting to hold back or wait and see, but I find embracing the challenge to be the best way to get the most out of all the opportunities Ohio State Optometry has to offer.
