How old were you when you received your first eye exam? What was the experience like for you?

The earliest eye exam that I can remember was when I was seven years old. I remember being excited to get glasses because my older brother had them, and I realized how much clearer I could see when I tried them on for fun.

When did you realize that you wanted to pursue a career in optometry?

In middle school, I had so many questions for my optometrist about optics and my rapidly progressing myopia that simply could not be answered in a 30-minute appointment window. I knew then that the best way to cure my curiosity was to learn about it myself and become an optometrist!

Are there any optometrists in your family?

Why did you choose Ohio State Optometry?

I chose Ohio State Optometry for the high academics/board passage rates, as well as the affordable tuition plans for in-state students (I was also well-established in Columbus since I attended Ohio State for undergrad).

What was your first impression of Ohio State Optometry?

My first impression was that everyone wants to see me succeed! I was completely bought into this mindset by the time orientation ended, and now I also want to give the same encouragement to everyone here as well.

What surprised you most about Ohio State and/or Columbus?

Sometimes I still can’t comprehend just how vast the Ohio State community is. The alumni network is huge and expands all over the world (my dad can vouch for this, as he heard someone shout “O-H!” during his last trip to Cambodia).

Which clubs/organizations have you joined at Ohio State?

I have joined SVOSH (Student Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity) and NOSA (National Optometric Student Association), while also being a class of 2023 representative.

Who has most positively affected you during your time as an optometry student so far?

My classmates have played a huge role in keeping me sane. There is also a sense of camaraderie - going through the same intense curriculum while we all navigate through a pandemic, social injustices, and all sorts of life events.

What’s your favorite way to relax or unwind after a busy week in class and/or clinic?

I typically unwind by playing volleyball or listening to music and napping.

How are you spending your summer?

This summer is my first time taking summer classes (as well as being in clinic and seeing patients), so I will be booked. Hopefully I will be able to spend my downtime outdoors and seeing friends and family!

What are you looking forward to next semester?

I’m looking forward to being more comfortable and well-rounded in clinic! Also being able to meet and socialize with the incoming class and the Opt II class that started during the pandemic.

What advice would you give to a new student starting optometry school this fall?

Without sounding too philosophical… just believe in yourself and trust that Ohio State Optometry will prepare you for success as a student and future optometrist!
